Example:
Contradiction: pg 5 “The story was that
the three skeletons, gleaming with phosphorescent light, danced over the small
rock, screaming”
This quote shows a contradiction because
the island the narrator is going to work on, is haunted. Most people with common sense wouldn’t take a
job somewhere where people have died, were eaten by birds, and now haunt the
area.
Again and Again pg 230: "Calpurnia, will you come out to the laboratory with me? I require your assistance unless you are not otherwise engaged"
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows again and again because Callie and grandfather keeping going out on hikes and out to the lab to make scientific studies. They collect species, observe species, and read about specimens. The pair are bonding and becoming close together, while Callie is maturing and growing up to be a young scientist.
Words of the Wiser pg 219: "She runs wild all day with a butterfly net. She doesn't know how to sew or keep house"
This quote shows words of the wiser because Callie's mom is telling Callie's dad that Callie needs to quit these science studies and that she needs to learn how to be a good housewife. This is wise because back then, in order to reassure women to be well off and taken care of, they needed to find a good husband who is educated and has money. Husbands want wives who can take care of them, their children, and their house. This would mean Callie would need to learn her destined skills to find a husband.
Words of the wiser pg 157: "And when something is all you know, it's easy to stand it. There is one other thing she knows: Her life could be much harder"
This shows the words of the wiser, granddaddy explaining to Callie why their maid can cook meals for a family of 9 every single day without getting bored or exhausted. She cooks for hours and the food is gobbled up in 15 minutes. Callie feels this a waste of time and effort, but granddaddy is teaching Callie a lesson.
Signpost 1-Contradiction:Pg 39 "..by the authority granted in me as Commandant of the Ranger Corps and blah blah blah and so on and so on, and why don't you shake your hands and that should just about do it."
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows a contrast/contradiction because when someone has been training for 5 years, and are going to graduate to start their career, you normally would expect the graduation to be more official. However, here, the Corps Commandant Crowley rushed through it as a joke, and didn't act very official as a leader would. Along with this, you wouldn't expect someone to pull a huge joke on you during a very important day of your life.
Signpost 2-Words of the Wiser:Pg 310 "True. Well try to keep your distance."
This quote is an example of Words of the Wiser. Right then in the book, Halt was warning Horace about a weapon he has never faced before. He was giving him advice and information about it, and how to effectively fight against it.
Signpost 3-Again and Again:Pg 263 :"Ferris? Not as far as i can kick him. And I'd enjoy seeing how far that might be."
Here, they are yet again discussing how untrustworthy and weak Halt's brother Ferris is. Many times throughout the story, they say many side comments about how lazy and untrustworthy Ferris is, like "But i trust Sean. He'll keep Ferris in line." and "You don't think those castle guards care a fig about Ferris, don't you?". These comments and thoughts occur many times throughout the story, beginning to end.
